familiar friend

the clicking and grinding occurring in my left knee makes me think of a cinder block being dragged across a wood floor.

my knees are no stranger to discomfort based on a steady diet of kneeling, climbing ladders, walking pitched roofs, and short jumps, quick starts and fast stops of any number of semi-athletic (or non-athletic) activities. now i am trying to channel the slow patience of david carradine’s kane from kung fu.
i walk slow, make my moves like i’m underwater and attempt to do the most work with the least effort. multiple daily icings of the swollen joint as well as some hastily gulped ibuprofen seem to keep the knee in a tolerable range of pain. my trusty neoprene knee brace cradles the fragile hinge and helps remind me to control my movement.

may the sound of the scraping block grow faint so i may say farewell to my familiar friend, pain.

  1. I remember that friend, soccer I believe, trip to the medical center, and a very large bottle of malt beer. Hope it feels better.

  2. Ain't nothin that can't be fixed with what's tucked away in the handle of a Ranger knife ... or the business end. Stop yer cryin and start choosin, pussy.

  3. As Your Attorney I recommend a class action lawsuit. If we can get others to share their grief with these horrible knee people this tragedy can be avoided in the future. Knees have a long history of troublemaking. Knees to the groin, Knights who say knee and the ever troubling "bees knees". You can be the first to make a real difference.

  4. This is the point at which one must consider graduate school and taking advantage of university health care. I twice broke a foot in southern Illinois. I got six X-rays for about $15. I also got a lecture on safe sex practices. I kept insisting that I'd heard of and used condoms, and that the pain was in my foot, but, hey: The doctor was just on a roll and didn't want to stop.
